Manpreet Jatana, 34, and Jaskirat Singh Ubhi, 36, appeared at London's Old Bailey court, charged with killing their three-year-old daughter Penelope Chandley, who died from acute malnutrition. According to Prosecutor Philip McGee, as reported by the Daily Mail, the couple, of Indian origin and following a vegetarian diet, intentionally starved the child, leading to her death. The child's body was found at the family home in the Hayes area of west London after the mother reported her death. Investigations revealed that the family's diet consisted only of butter, lentils, and yogurt. The couple had previously denied charges of murder, as well as other charges including manslaughter by gross negligence, causing a child's death, and child abuse. Judge Mark Lucraft ordered them to be remanded in custody, with their trial to begin at the Old Bailey. The prosecutor noted that the couple were not working at the time of the child's death and were isolated from their extended family and the wider community, which contributed to the child's tragedy.
