Mexican diplomat Alejandro Gertz Manero, former Attorney General, has been appointed as Mexico's ambassador to the United Kingdom. This decision was approved by the country's Senate, marking a new chapter in his political career. Gertz Manero emphasized that his departure from the head of the Federal Prosecutor's Office (FGR) was a personal decision that he submitted to the senators for approval. 'I submitted myself to the Senate and made myself available, and when I considered it necessary to make a change in my public life,' he stated. In his new role, the diplomat will focus on strengthening academic cooperation between the two nations. He noted that over 65% of Mexicans residing in England are pursuing higher education. 'It is truly an extraordinary case that in the United Kingdom there are more Mexicans studying at the higher education level than in all of Europe combined,' Gertz Manero highlighted. His goal is to leverage this human capital for the development of Mexico. 'We want that once they have the knowledge they are acquiring, they can apply it to their lives and work in Mexico,' he added. In parallel, he indicated that his agenda would include strengthening bilateral economic relations and attracting investment, considering that 'Mexico has an important economic relationship with England.' 'Our balance is favorable, but I believe there is enormous potential that we must take into account,' he concluded. It should be recalled that on November 27, the Senate approved Gertz Manero's request to leave his position as Attorney General for a new diplomatic mission in a 'friendly country.' President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that this country would be the United Kingdom. On January 7, the 86-year-old Gertz Manero resigned, and Ernestina Godoy was appointed to replace him. It is expected that the lawmakers' decision will be fully ratified in the coming days, and the diplomat will assume his new duties.
