The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported on Tuesday about a thwarted bomb attack against a police station in the town of Lurgan with a 'rudimentary but viable' explosive device, attributing the action to dissidents of the now-defunct IRA. Deputy Chief Constable Ryan Henderson explained that the homemade bomb was placed in the trunk of a food delivery car's car the previous night, when two armed masked men, under threat of death, forced the driver to take it to the police station. 'No matter how unsophisticated it was, (the bomb) presented a significant risk to the life of the terrified delivery driver, our security staff and the local community,' the police leader stated, calling the attack 'reckless and cowardly'. After intercepting the aforementioned vehicle at 21:00 GMT on Monday, the two individuals placed the suitcase-sized device in the trunk and told the driver that if he did not take it to the Lurgan police station, in the border county of Armagh, 'they would kill him,' Henderson assured. 'The car was driven to the police station, where the driver managed to escape and ran to the security staff to inform them that there was a bomb in the vehicle,' noted the deputy chief officer. PSNI bomb disposal officers carried out a 'controlled explosion' to ensure the vehicle's safety, he added.
