British Mint Issues Coin Honoring Freddie Mercury

The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom is honoring the late singer Freddie Mercury by issuing a new coin that commemorates the 40th anniversary of his legendary performance at Live Aid. The coin features an image of Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, with his head thrown back and holding a microphone stand during the performance. A musical line along the edge of the coin symbolizes the four-octave range of his voice. Mercury's sister, Kashmira Pulsara, struck the first version of the coin at the Mint in Wales last week. Mercury died in 1991 at the age of 45, just one day after publicly announcing his HIV-positive status.
