The UK and EU have lifted sanctions on Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khatib, following a UN Security Council decision. This move is part of the ongoing peace process in Syria.

UK and EU Lift Sanctions on Syrian Officials

The United Kingdom lifted sanctions on Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Friday after the United Nations Security Council made a similar decision. This comes ahead of Sharaa's meeting with US President Donald Trump next week, while the European Union confirmed it would make the same decision. The UK announced the move in a notice on the government's website, also lifting sanctions from Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khatib. Both individuals were previously subject to financial sanctions targeting ISIS and Al-Qaeda. A spokesperson for the EU stated on Friday that the UN decision would reflect in the bloc's actions. The UK had partially lifted sanctions on Syria in April, while the EU lifted its economic sanctions in May, but arms and security restrictions remain in place. A spokesperson for the European Commission said: 'We remain committed to supporting a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process to help build a better future for all Syrians.'
