It is known that last week, the two-time title holder of "The Strongest Man in the World" and three-time Olympic Games participant, Jeff Capes, passed away. Capes was 75 years old. Capes was born in Lincolnshire and twice won the gold medal in shot put at the Commonwealth Games in 1974 and 1978. He also twice became "The Strongest Man in the World" in 1983 and 1985. In 1980, he set a British record in shot put with a distance of 68.21 meters, which still remains unbeaten. In the following decade, Capes won two gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze medal at the European Championship in indoor athletics.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of British athletics great Jeff Capes", stated the British Athletics press office. "We express our sincere condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time", the statement published by British Athletics Union reads. Capes was awarded a bronze in the competition "The Strongest Man in the World" in Tokyo in 1987, ten years after he won bronze at the European Championship in outdoor athletics. The late sportsman also represented Great Britain at three different Olympic Games in 1972, 1976, and 1980. His best result was fifth place in the latest Olympic Games, in which he participated, in Moscow.
