Golden Pocket Watch from Titanic Rescuer Sells for Record £1.56M

The sale of a gold pocket watch, which belonged to the captain who rescued more than 700 passengers of the Titanic, has been completed for a record amount of £1.56 million (over $2 million). Auction house "Henry Aldridge and Sons" announced that this is the highest price ever paid for any souvenir related to the "Titanic". The watch was purchased by a private buyer from the USA.

The previous record for the sale of a Titanic artifact was set in April, when other gold pocket watches, found on the luxury passenger John Jacob Astor, were sold for £1.175 million at the same auction house. The Titanic was constructed by the best engineers using previous technologies and was considered one of the safest ships in the world. Its sinking was a tremendous shock to society, as the ship was believed to have the highest safety standards.
