The government of the United Kingdom presented a draft law on Thursday aimed at providing powers to the law enforcement agency "full-fledged, analogous powers in combating terrorism." This proposal suggests expanding police powers for combating crime and violations of the law.
According to the proposed legislation, the police would be able to apply measures that are usually used to prevent terrorist acts, in cases where there is a threat to public safety. In particular, this concerns the accelerated deployment of law enforcement forces and the application of techniques for detaining suspects.
The British Minister of Internal Affairs stated that these amendments to the legislation are necessary to ensure a quick and effective response to threats to public safety. At the same time, representatives of opposition parties expressed concerns about the potentially dangerous misuse of expanded police powers and violations of citizens' rights.
It is expected that the draft law will be discussed in Parliament in the coming weeks, where it will be analyzed and proposals for improvements will be submitted.
