Starmer Defies Trump's Pressure on Greenland

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told parliament on Wednesday that he would not bow to pressure from US President Donald Trump over the future of the self-governing Danish territory of Greenland. 'I will not buckle, and Britain will not abandon its principles and values over the future of Greenland under threats of tariffs, and that is my clear position,' Starmer added, noting that he will host his Danish counterpart, Mette Frederiksen, in London on Thursday. Trump had previously threatened to impose tariffs on Britain and other European countries for opposing his efforts to acquire Greenland. Starmer also faced criticism in parliament from opposition Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch over Trump's condemnation of his government's deal regarding the Chagos Islands. In response to the criticism, Starmer told MPs: 'The words of President Trump were explicitly aimed at pressuring me into abandoning my principles. The future of Greenland is decided by Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone. That was his objective.' He also added that 'the future of Greenland is a pivotal issue dividing the world at present, and it has tangible consequences. I have been clear and steadfast in my position on the future of Greenland.'
