The BBC confirmed with two separate sources that two Iranian missiles were fired towards a British military base. The UK Ministry of Defence has neither confirmed nor denied the two Iranian missiles were fired towards the base. It stated in a press release that Iranian attacks in the region represent “a threat to British interests and its allies”. The UK government gave permission to the US military to conduct what it calls defensive operations from the Diego Garcia base. So far, there are no reports that the US has carried out missions from that facility. However, the US has conducted operations from the Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford base in Gloucestershire. The UK has not given permission to the US to carry out attacks from the Akrotiri base, which the British army has in Cyprus. The IAEA is studying the report,” it stated in a press release published on social network X.
Previous attacks The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran had already acknowledged a previous attack in Natanz. On March 3, it stated that there had been no radioactive material leak following an attack perpetrated at that facility two days earlier. In June, the US dropped bombs on Natanz, as well as on two other nuclear facilities: Fordo and Isfahan. Shortly after, the country's leader, Donald Trump, claimed that these attacks had “completely destroyed” Iran's nuclear program. These attacks on the three complexes in June marked a significant escalation in the conflict between Iran and Israel. The offensive included the use of “bunker buster bombs”. In a televised address in June, Trump described the attack as a “spectacular military success,” that achieved “complete and total” destruction of the facilities. However, Iranian authorities, for their part, maintained that the bombings did not cause major damage. Tehran has insisted that its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and denies that it seeks to develop nuclear weapons. But in March 2025, according to the IAEA, Iran had about 275 kg of uranium enriched to 60% purity. That percentage is well above the level needed to develop nuclear energy for civilian purposes and is close to the 90% required for military use. Washington and Tehran had been in talks about Iran's nuclear program two days before the current war broke out on February 28. The US leader had threatened military action if no agreement was reached.
Diego Garcia military base The BBC was able to confirm the veracity of reports stating that two Iranian missiles were fired towards a British military base on Diego Garcia island. The island, a remote atoll of the Chagos archipelago, in the Indian Ocean, hosts a joint UK and US military base. No missile reached the base. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the information citing unnamed US officials. Download the latest version and activate them.
